Why Cameroonians Travel abroad !

Every year, thousands of young Cameroonians travel abroad. In high school and in the University it is likely that
many young people will receive some kind of encouragement to travel, study or work abroad. It
may seem like you have a lot going on so you don’t seriously consider these opportunities or
maybe you write them off since you plan on traveling later in life. Many people encourage
traveling at an early age, because the earlier you can learn the lessons travel teaches the better.
The decision to move to a foreign land is a big one and should not be taken lightly.

While living abroad could be both a positive and negative experience,
several popular reasons
account for people’s decision to travel abroad.

Some youths make a temporary move because they want to earn money or learn a foreign
language. For example, in many countries au pair programs are quite popular. These allow young
foreigners to do domestic work for a family in return for room and board, and they are able to
use their spare time to study the local language. This is exemplified by many young Cameroonians
who travel to China, to learn the chineese language for a specified duration.

Many Cameroonians travel abroad due to poverty. Many who travel for this reason have a sincere
desire to change their financial circumstances and those of their families. Hence, they move to
countries whose pay rates are higher than theirs. Often, these young Cameroonians are willing to
accept jobs abroad they would consider as degrading in their home country. We may also say
that, sometimes some feel that their expertise is not favorable in their own country.

Then there are others who move abroad to gain an education. People generally are of the opinion
that a good education will secure a well-paying job. Others believe that to succeed, they
must acquire a foreign education or attend some of the most prestigious schools in the world.
While these options have work for some, it does not always guarantee success.
Recent trends have been marked with a growing desire for young people to become
entrepreneurs. Many of them feel that to succeed in the global market, they need knowledge of
the drivers of entrepreneurship in different parts of the world. Travelling abroad has also been an
invaluable way for them to acquire the skillset and mindset needed to succeed as entrepreneurs
in their home countries.

There are others who move because they are not sure what they want to do after school. In most
cases, they travel in the hopes of continuing their education and there after deciding what exactly
they want to do with their lives.

Despite attempts by the government and other individuals who have the experience of living
abroad to discourage others from travelling abroad, the number leaving the country continues to

increase. This shows that in addition to discouraging travelling abroad amongst young people,
there is a greater need for people to know how to legally travel abroad, how to get decent jobs
abroad, and how to manage the realities of adapting to a new culture.

Fotabe University and its subsidiaries are committed to guiding young interested Cameroonians
on how to study, acquire decent work and lead a decent live abroad. For more information, please
